In this issue of EMME/2 NEWS we give a short overview on the main new features and enhancements of the EMME/2 Release 5.0 software edition. This new release has now been in beta test for some time and the general distribution will follow within the next few weeks. As you will see, when reading on, this new release constitutes again a major step forward, both in functionality and performance of the EMME/2 system. Note that EMME/2 NEWS is thought as a complement to the release notes and the User's Manual, to which you should refer to for more detailed technical information.

The conclusion of a new release of EMME/2 is usually a period of intense and taxing activities by all the team members concerned. We have reached now the satisfying time when the release is nearly finished and we are eager to get the reaction of the users to the new developments.
Release 5.0, which is described in detail in this issue, abounds with new features and contains the release of EMTOOL, a graphical procedure interface, which is device independent and will permit, in addition to reducing the time required to produce plots, a speedier adaptation to graphical display devices unsupported to date as well as opening new development possibilities. Also, the transit analysis aspects have been enhanced considerably, highlighting the fact that EMME/2 is an integrated package which allows the consideration of all modes of transport in an urban area in an integrated fashion. It is perhaps timely that a publication entitled Integrated Europe, which will appear this fall, will feature an article on EMME/2.
