Again it's time for another issue of EMME/2 NEWS. For the first time, we include a feature that was contributed by EMME/2 users. In their article on "The Use of EMME/2 in a Functional Classification Study", Andrew Cotugno, Dick Walker and Nina Kramer from Metro Portland report on an interesting application in which they managed to separate the auto volumes on the network into their local and regional components. Thanks to the folks from Portland!
The second article shows that the limit of three user data fields can often be overcome by packing more than one attribute into one user field. The article shows how this is done and which expressions to use for accessing individual attributes.

With the publication of the third issue of EMME/2 NEWS we note, with great pride and satisfaction, that the EMME/2 user's community is growing steadily in North America and Europe; it now includes even transportation planners in the Peoples Republic of China and in Saudi Arabia. This progress is due in part to the fine work of our Distributors, who now include Finnmap Oy in Finland and Aster S.A. in Italy as well.
In the past year, we have dedicated our development efforts to making EMME/2 a flexible and powerful method by adding features and modules which permit the implementation of sophisticated demand models and aid in the calibration of network assignment and the evaluation of results. The plots on color graphic equipment have been enhanced and may now also be displayed on relatively low cost monitor/video board combinations for PC based systems.
In the coming year, we plan to continue to add functionality to the EMME/2 system. Many of the planned additions are inspired from the numerous suggestions that we have received from the users in the past year. We hope to see many of you at the Second Annual EMME/2 User's Group Meeting in Portland, OR, in October.
